Ashton Holly of Dallas, Texas is only 15 years old yet makes official digital art pieces for artists that are dark in character yet bright in their own different ways. Find out who inspires him and what he has in store for 2019.
Sharnelle: You’ve created some dope ass official pieces. When did making graphic design covers for artists start?
I started to make them back in September, but never really put an official cover out until early December.
Sharnelle: Has an artist ever used your work? If so, how was the
Two artists have used my work before for a single/album. The experience itself was time consuming but rewarding at the same time, knowing that I see my art online and other people can appreciate it as much as I enjoyed making it.
Sharnelle: What motivates you to create?
Music is my biggest motivator, as well as other creators and their work. Whenever I have an idea for artwork, I’ll take out my AirPods and just turn on my playlist. When it comes to other creators, I look up to them a lot and aspire to make pieces as great as them.
Sharnelle: What goes into the process of creating a piece? How do
you get in the mindset?
I’ll go to my desk, turn off the lights, and just get started. I try to go in with a clear mindset though, so I’ll turn off my phone and other devices I’m not using to keep me focused.
Sharnelle: You seem very interested in Travis Scott. Is he someone that inspires you greatly? Who or what else inspires you?
Travis has been my favorite artist in the game for a while now. I just love the energy he provides in concerts and who he is as a person, and he keeps me going with art. Other people that inspire me include Kid Cudi, Kanye West, Tame Impala, DanLevi, and my mom and sister, who are graphic artists/designers as well.
Sharnelle: What about these artists makes you attracted to them and inspired?
I’m attracted to them because their music is so therapeutic and kept me from doing things that’ll cause harm or hinder me. They inspire me a lot because of how hard they work on their craft. They never stop no matter how many people negate them and put them down. I want to implement hard work and effort into my art just as much as they do in the studios and beyond.
Sharnelle: When did you start making graphical art?
Sharnelle: Have you ever changed mediums, like to physical drawing? If so, which do you prefer?
I’ve never changed mediums, but I’ll take it into consideration for the future.
Sharnelle: Was it easy for you to get going on this artistic path? How
has the journey been?
To be honest, it was difficult to get going on this path because of time management and high school. The journey however has been a great ride so far.
Sharnelle: Where do you plan to go with your art in the future? What are your artistic goals for 2019?
I’ve always admired clothes and fashion designers and had a small business of my own before I got into Graphics, so maybe I’ll get back to clothes as a side job. My artistic goals for 2019 are to remain consistent and creative as possible. It’d be an honor to work with more artists as well.
Sharnelle: You said your mother and sister are both designers/graphic artists. Would you say family plays a big role and influence in your art life?
I think it does. They pushed me to consider graphics and art more and made me take classes, and they’ve had a positive influence on where I stand in art right now.
Sharnelle: It sounds like you got everything under control and locked in. Your future is looking bright. Thanks for having this interview with Fangz, do you have any shout-outs or anything to add for the audience?
