Monica V. Gong is an 18 year old artist based in the Bay Area. She uses multiple mediums within her collage art. Her artwork often involves perfectly placed but misplaced facial features such as eyes and mouths and noses. She also often creates based from feelings.
This is a piece that she captioned Disassociation. Google defines disassociation as “the disconnection or separation of something from something else or the state of being disconnected”. You can feel that definition echoing from the piece actually. Words scatter across the background: happiness, getaway getup, paradise, seek, escape, please, lies, live, look, take. These words show a mind that’s trying to separate and leave something to go somewhere else. Seeking something better. There’s also literal separation in the figure with the use of thread or yarn near the midsection. The figure is also made up of disconnected and misplaced patterns, everything is in the state of disconnection. Monica did very well in portraying this state of being that many of us may be able to relate to.
